MOBILE SOCIETY
New services can track you -- or your loved ones -- by cell phone
It sounded too Orwellian ever to succeed. In 2000, Korean cellular carrier SK Telecom introduced a service called "find friends" that lets others follow your every move, using a signal beamed from your handset. At the time, many wondered whether anyone would consent to such tracking.
But five years -- and countless terrorist attacks, earthquakes, and other calamities -- later, the service is taking off. "I used to be worried when my boyfriend didn't answer my calls," says Shim You Sun, a 25-year-old accountant who pays 11¢ each time she checks up on him. "Now I can rest assured that he is at work or busy attending a seminar."
She's one of more than 4 million Koreans who have signed up for various services using technology that can determine a cellular subscriber's location. One, costing $3 per month, will send a message with your coordinates to friends and family periodically while you're traveling. Another will automatically dispatch a text message to friends who get within a block or so of each other as they move around town. Yet another, costing 29¢ a day, will send a message if a person isn't at a specified place at a certain time and then allows the tracker to see the person's movements over the previous five hours. And 20,000 parents pay $10 per month for alerts if their children stray from the route between school and home. The Korea Association of Information %26amp; Telecommunication reckons such services are growing by 74% annually, with revenues expected to triple in 2007, to $1.54 billion, from $500 million last year.
In Korea, the future may have arrived early. Elsewhere it might take a while before consumers warm up to the idea of cellphone tracking. In the U.S., a company called Teen Arrive Alive offers parents a $20-a-month tracking service for their teens. But to date the company has sold the service to only one cell-phone carrier, Nextel.
Others are having a tough time, too. Cingular phased out a tracking service offered by AT%26amp;T Wireless when the two carriers merged last year. Small wonder: Less than 20% of Americans are willing to pay for such info, says market watcher Jupiter Research.
In other countries, consumers are proving more open to cellular tracking. In Britain, The Carphone Warehouse offers mapAmobile, a $52-a-year service that lets parents track their cell-toting kids. And in Japan, subscribers can sign up for text messages advertising bargains at department stores as they pass by.
Korea, though, is clearly at the forefront -- and not just for consumers. Hwang Yoon, who runs a call center for 1,500 taxi drivers, uses a service that broadcasts text messages to cabdrivers within a one-, two-, or three-kilometer radius of a fare's location. The first driver who responds -- by pushing a button on the phone -- gets the job. "This technology is an excellent and cheap fit for us," says Hwang. Sales of business-related tracking services in Korea are expected to jump more than fivefold this year, to $248 million, from $43 million last year.
KEEPING IT PRIVATE
Even so, the 1984 feel of some of these services has prompted Seoul to step in to ensure customers' privacy. In December, the National Assembly approved a law that requires a government license for all companies gathering such location information. Companies with licenses can only share that information with people designated by those being tracked, and those individuals are ensured access to detailed records of all requests for tracking. They can also opt out of the service any time or decide to slip away temporarily by selecting a "hide" option on their phones. "We saw lots of potential in location-based services and took steps to protect individual rights as there were lingering concerns over privacy," says Pan Sang Kwon, a deputy director at the Ministry of Information %26amp; Communication.
It may seem creepy to some, but for many Koreans the increased security of letting others know where you are is worth the tradeoff.

A topic for Sociology class that I can research?
Need to come up with a topic to research about for Sociology class. Any good ideas that pertain to society today?
A topic for Sociology class that I can research?
I was a social science major in college. I studied Psychology, Sociology and Criminal Justice.
Here is a topic I wrote a paper on in my sociology class:
Differential Social Learning Theory “Smoking”
Here is a question you can answer as well. This is what I also wrote a paper on: How is your family structured? That is, is it a traditional nuclear family, or does it represent the diversity of American families? How would you apply the current debate over family values to your own family experience?
And, here is another topic: Pet Companionship for the Elderly
I did papers on all these topics and got an "A".
Hope these ideas will help you...

I need a good persuasive research paper topic?
The paper must be persuasive and it must have a minumum of three supporting arguments/points. They are not allowed to choose a topic that depends upon a moral or a belief (a "right" or wrong), since these can't be proven with empirical evidence. You also can't choose a conspiracy theory (we never actually went to the moon) or a paranormal topic (Bigfoot exists).
i need something interesting that has two sides to it and i can prove one side with research

Human Genome Project.
DNA manipulation in plants.
What are some DNA involed topics for research papers?
DNA use in geneology (wasn't it determined, through DNA, that Thomas Jefferson fathered children with one of his slaves?)
The effects of faulty DNA in criminal cases(there have been numerous cases of felons being found not guilty after further DNA testing was done)
Mandatroy DNA testing for convicted felons(numerous "cold cases" have been solved since some states have mandatory DNA testing for felons)

Reply:oh my gosh there's sooooooo many! What you need to do is find a controversial topic that interests you. I have no idea what your interests are, so I can't help you with that. But if you pick a topic that you really are interested and passionate about, writing the paper will be a piece of cake and enjoyable.
If you want me to help you come up with a topic, type in some of your interests and I'll check back here and edit my answer.

What would be a good research topic about euthanasia?
People with terminal cancer - is it their right to terminate their own life? What are our civil rights?
What would be a good research topic about euthanasia?
See if you can find a correlation between euthanasia and abortion. They come from a similar view of the value of life.
Reply:possible economic effects
Reply:Look up the Netherland's and Belgum's euthuinasia program. They have one.
Reply:I think it would be interesting to find out who actually seeks the treatment, how you go about finding a doctor to agree and if their is a support structure in place for the families at the time of death.
I also think it would be interesting to research physicians who have euthanized and see if there are common threads linking them in terms of life experiences, education, where they live, politics.
Hope this helps.

I need research discussion topics for running...?
so i'm working on this paper for english called the isearch, and i'm having trouble zero-ing in on a topic. i want to do something related to running like cross country/track and field...a topic having to do with that. if you know anything about running and such, your help would be greatly appreciated.
I need research discussion topics for running...?
An isearch is supposed to be very personal, so you could do something about how running has changed your life - what it would be like if you couldn't run, what the benefits are physically, and what it does for you mentally. You could research the "runner's high" and the stress relief, and find out why it happens, then go into the way it makes you feel, and how it feels to win a race. I bet runner's world has a website where you could find testimonials from other runners as well.
Reply:Hi,
Please don't mistake this for me bad-mouthing jogging. It's a wonderful sport. I suggest you research the very disproportionate rate of knee surgeries required by female runners, as opposed to male. I'm essentially giving you a good topic. I'm only doing this because in researching this. You will learn about it. Hopefully, before you suffer any injuries. The biomechanics behind this is quite interesting. Good Luck.

Interesting topics to research?
we have to do a research paper for school, and we can choose any topic we want - except anything related to people.
i can't think of anything. try as i might, i cannot think of any subject that would be interesting to research and to present.
i don't want to do something that someone has already done in the previous years, so if anyone is an expect, or at least know some things, on a particular subject that you find very interesting, please answer this question.
i'm not doing sports, and i'd rather stay away from diseases like down syndrome, std, hemophilia, etc. as everyone has already done them before. i want an original topic, but something interesting and easy to find information on.
thank you so much.

Help! What is a good Sports Marketing Research topic?
I need to find a good Sports Marketing Research topic for class. This is a topic that HAS to be testable (surveys, etc).
Ex. Does the having of a major college sports program impact student decisions on attending that university?
Help! What is a good Sports Marketing Research topic?
Here's a couple:
Is an attendee more likely to buy beer at a professional football, baseball, or basketball game?
Is there a correlation between a professional basketball players points-per-game average and their ability to increase product sales? Is there a stronger correlation with rebound average, player position (guard, forward), or some other statistic?

Anyone able to suggest some truly unique topics for a research paper?
I would have a lot less trouble writing them if I could ever come up with something not overdone and something that I could actually learn from which is the point.
Anyone able to suggest some truly unique topics for a research paper?
I did one on Bollywood in Indian culture. It was a lot of fun because I learned more about a different culture and really how Bollywood was effecting Indian culture and spreading to American culture.
Reply:I got several, you research diseases affected by stem cell research, you look into interesting hobbies like painting, or scrapbooking. You research different groups related to animal conservation, or civil rights groups and their impacts on american society and world society
Reply:One of my favorites that I've done (that was quite original in it's time... I'm not so sure anymore, maybe?) -- It was titled: Mickey Mouse Manipulation and I researched how certain Disney movies effected a child's sociological psychology in the future.

Research paper , topics needed?
So im doing a research paper on global warming and i've run out of ideas to write about.
So far i have how its caused, what we can do to reduce it, how we can reduce it globally, how its effecting us now, how its effecting us in the future, and how its real. Any thing else i can write about? im stumped!
Research paper , topics needed?
What about including it's effect on our culture (i.e. Michael Crichton's "State of Fear") and some arguments against the presence of global warming.
Reply:an interesting topic that most people don't think about is that for many reptiles, the sex of the offspring depends on the temperature of incubation of the egg. So TEMPERATURE determines the SEX! In some species only females develop at warmer temperatures (that is only a few degrees different!) If global warming increases the temperature of the world by a few degrees, then it is possible that many reptile species (which temperature determines the sex) will have only one sex developing and without the other sex there will be no more reproduction, followed by extinction of those species.

Why people are not taking global warming seriously.
Hope this helps.

Why exactly is our planet Earth going to be destroyed in 2012? People say we are destroying our landfills by not recycling and the ozone layer is getting thinner, but there is so many details to work with, that there is pretty much no possible way in figuring out why our Planet Earth is going to be destroyed by then!
I hoped this source of info helped.
Reply:there is allot of things that you could do. you could write about its effects on countries and international politics. what changes it could cause for the environment and ecosystems. eg disrupting currents that bring up nutrients for krill causing a collapse of fish stocks.

I did one on that.
I did one on that.
I am trying to decide on a topic for a research paper for a Social Science English class?
What are some ideas for good topics? They can be based on issues you would want to know about and that you find interesting, societal problems (women's issues, race etc), anything that would be able to write a decent research paper. I am open to any suggestions. This is for an advanced college level english class by the way.

Possible topics for a Women's and Gender Studies research paper?
The class is gendered perspective on cultural issues (200 level). I can't think of anything to write the essay on. our main topics are fundamentalism, globalism and militarism (online activism is also an option). She says that there will be four foci-- racism, sexism, homophobia and economic oppression.
Possible topics for a Women's and Gender Studies research paper?
Great! Forced female circumcision in third world countries to reduce women's sexual pleasure and keep them docile.
That is a hot topic
Reply:Economic disadvantages of motherhood vs. biological imperative. The most common conflict expressed by the newest generation of adult women is the challenge of career development vs. quality child-rearing. A part of wage inequalities is due to women making the choice to spend more time with their families than with their careers, which require unhealthy / unfair / exploitive amounts of worker energies from both men and women alike, which is where the root of the problem is found.
Most women need to work. Poverty is a world-wide problem suffered mostly by women and children and severely destabilizes societies. Although the Industrial Revolution brought these cultural changes in a dominoes effect that altered the work force and women's roles, we still have not begun to address how we as individuals and as societies are supposed to raise our families now that no one's left at home and now that we do not live in extended family arrangements with older relatives to mind the children.
Socially funded quality childcare, for example, should be a part of post-Industrial societies that have the reality of requiring that over 70% of mothers must work. Maternity/Paternity leave is another step in the right direction. The Israelis experimented with communal child-rearing. The Communist Chinese experimented with birth control measures. Commercial companies experimented with on-site childcare facilities which decrease workers' absenteeism and increase productivity among both female and male employees. Etc.
I personally advocate for a tax funded national program in which parents who have demonstrated adequate educational or training self-sufficiencies such that either parent can support the entire family if needed would be paid to stay home with their pre-Kindergarten children. BOTH parents. Why should the youngest and most economically weak socioeconomic group (young parents) have to bear the entire brunt of raising society's next generation of children? Wouldn't society be stronger if we helped young families to be stronger while they are raising their children? Aren't 99% percent of all human sufferings and social diseases rooted in lousy, inadequate childhoods that we could improve upon with a focus on helping young families over the enormous burdens and difficulties of getting started out in life?

I need a good research topic for a women's studies class. Any Ideas?
Okay .. please don't say feminism, or abuse or abortion or anything typical like that. It would be really easy to just pick one of those obvious topics and right a research paper about. I'm trying to figure out something that is not as common and that you don't hear about all the time, but is still interesting and I will be able to find enough information on it to write a 10 page paper. I'm really stumped and have been rackin my brain and trying to look something up for weeks. Does anyone have any good ideas about what I could pick to do my paper on that my professor will be impressed with and the other students will not be bored to death when I present it?
I need a good research topic for a women's studies class. Any Ideas?
Is this a POSITION paper? Will you argue that BC is a good thing? If so, think about how it has given women freedom that they never had before. We never would have had such a large female work force without BC. Before BC, the average married woman had a child or pregnancy every year or two, often resulting in huge families (my grandpa was one of 11, my mother in law was one of 13, etc.). Would women have ever really been able to pursue higher education and top levels of management with 13 kids? Don't think so. Would our economy be where it is (on a global level as well) with only men working full time? Also, it gave women sexual freedoms never known before. Now, hardly any woman is a virgin when she marries, because BC lets her have sex with a partner with whom she only has a sexual interest, not a marriage interest. Conversely, BC lets women postpone childbearing to the point that when they DO want kids, they encounter fertility issues due to age. Would we have the multi-billion dollar a year infertility/IVF industry we have now if there were no BC? No way. Also, what about the health issues? The Pill has probably saved many lives--lots of women died in childbirth or suffered ill effects from so many pregnancies. But, the pill also raises your risk for heart attack, stroke, and deadly blod clots, especially when you're older. What are the long term concerns involved in being on the Pill for 15 or more years? Why isn't there a male BC pill? Is it just because it's the woman that carries the baby and is therefore her sole responsibility? What role has BC played in the spread of AIDS and other STDs--that is, if a woman doesn't worry about getting pregnant, is she less likely to have safe sex?
The Pill literally changed the world in MANY ways, and you should have no trouble writing your minimum pages! If you just stop to think about how many things have changed since it's use became so widespread, it really is astounding. I would say it's up there with penicillin in terms of a drug that has affected virtually everyone and in a lot of not-so-obvious ways. Hope this has helped and good luck!

Some sites to help you get started.
Reply:I think you should take a stand on birth control because while it may be legal in some places it was not always so. Also, there is the possibility of status/stigma across cultures. Some places see woman who take birth control as loose while others see it as responsible. Good luck.
Reply:Yes, menopause. pre and post. menopause is a woman's change of life. Those words are not JUST words. A woman really changes when she does not get her period anymore. Libido goes down the tubes, and the body takes on another shape. Metally, thoughts really change. I think there is some difference when woman bear chldren and woman that do not.
I am a woman, no children, and I did not know the changes that took place in my body were that serious until I experienced them. I am 58 years old. Alot of woman divorce after menopause. I also understand why older men go after younger woman . Alot of research in this taboo area. Good Luck
Reply:I'd do some historical research on Margaret Sanger and the early reactions to the movement or historical research on oral contraceptives (the pill) and how it changed women's lives (being able to control their own fertility without a man's intervention or mechanical barriers) in the late 1960's, or even the discovery of the HPV virus and the cervical cancer connection, and whether the necessary reliance on condoms is changing women's ideas about their own sexual empowerment.
Reply:You should write about women and raunch culture- ie. the impact of the sex industry (pornography, stripping, Girls Gone Wild, prostitution etc), but with the added dynamic of how women have begun to be active participants in this industry, operating under the assumption that if they choose to do it, they are actually gaining power over men ( a covert form of exploitation and manipulation, as well as a sad, sad state of denial). Not enough research has been done on this topic in general, but definately enough for a ten page paper. I also think women and crime is an interesting topic. Research shows that women are convicted more often and given longer sentences than men for nonviolent crimes. Studies also show that women are impacted by incarceration more negatively than men and have greater difficulties getting jobs, maintaining parental rights, are given harsher probation terms, and are given less resources to stay out of trouble. If you didn't like either of these, hopefully they at least got you thinking...Good luck.

I think we usually associate that field with males, but why should we? Women have very creative minds and are good problem solvers. I am listing a few of the sources, but I know beyond a doubt that you can do the research yourself if you select this topic. Best of luck.
Reply:What about current child support /vistation laws... with a spin that noone expects. Reply:First, I presuppose that your women's studies class has already covered such obligatory Feminist critics as Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar, Elaine Showalter, and Helene Cixous, and that perhaps the course syllabus started out the semester reading Virginia Woolf's "A Room of One's Own". Having stated the "givens" of almost every survey women's studies class along with its mandatory theories, such as "writing the body" and "women's time", as a former college English professor (and a current secondary English teacher), I'd first suggest you need to narrow your topic and then twist it a tad.
For example, you might write about a pop-cultural icon , such as Madonna, Anna Nicole Smith (selections from her diaries are now online), or (dare I suggest it) Paris Hilton, and show how her actions either empower women or detract from their empowerment.
If all else fails, Amy Tan and Margaret Atwood continue to write some very fine contemporary Feminist novels. My favorite Atwood novel, "Alias Grace" (1996), for example, deviates from the Victorian idea of "the angel in the house."

Can you help me think of a research paper topic?
It can be any topic, but I have to be able to prove a point about something having to do with it.
Can you help me think of a research paper topic?
The key here is to LIMIT or NARROW DOWN your topic so it is manageable in a research paper. For example, THE CIVIL WAR would be much too broad. WHY WAS THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG CONSIDERED THE TURNING POINT OF THE CIVIL WAS would be narrowed down and manageable. Secondly, put your topic in the form of a question. Then the answer to the question becomes your research. For example, THE HISTORY OF MTV is a very poor topic because it is much too broad and does not allow you to answer a question which is the "point" you are trying to develop. Choose a subject that interests you, narrow it down, put it into the form of a question so you will have a point to research. Good luck.

MTV started in 1983 and it grew into a huge financial gold mine for the corporation that owns it, I think Viacom. Now MTV is aired in languages throughout the world, and it's the trend setter in the music industry.

I have a WW2 related website here: http://ww2db.com
In terms of the categories "People", "Events", "Ships", and "Aircraft", what do you think is missing?
For example, I know that General Roy Geiger's biography is missing from the "People" section.

Does anyone have any suggestions on good possible research problems?
I'm in desperate need of a good research topic...! can anyone suggest to me interesting research topics and/or research problems..(which are fit to be studied by high school students..)? I'd really appreciate it..
Does anyone have any suggestions on good possible research problems?
I am not sure if this will help but these topics are good for debating:
Should the British police be armed?
Should we really be concerned about global warming?
Is euthanasia justified?
Is cloning morally correct?
Hope these help.

Would Phobias be considered a good topic on a research paper in Human Biology?
I have to do a research paper and presentation a topic of my choice in Human Biology...I decided to pick Anxiety Disorders, specifcally 'Phobias'. Does that relate with human biology and does that make a good topic?
Would Phobias be considered a good topic on a research paper in Human Biology?
I dont know about human biology... that sounds more like something for a Psych paper. But if you want to do phobias, you can talk about brain activity and what might be the conditions of detecting that type of problem... neural chemical imbalance and stuff.
Reply:It depends how much the class focused on pyschology. I did a paper for a similar class on the effects of alcohol and drug abuse on the body and it was really easy to find information.
Reply:i say go with Erin B's answer. cause phobias are more of a pschological thing not a biological thing
Reply:I would consider it a valid topic if you were able to show how phobias have some type of physiological basis. Phobias are generally thought of as mental health disorders triggered by a specific life event. If the paper is supposed to be Human Biology, I would suggest a topic that is more closelu conneced to biology. If you really want to keep Phobias as the topic, perhaps writing about how anti-anxiety drugs interact with the brain to treat Phobias.
Reply:Do not listen to any of these functional biologists. This is a good evolutionary question. You could explore the evolved histories of the snake or spider phobia. How they arose among our ancestors as a general defense against the venomous. Do not make the mistake of these molecular and microbiologists. Biology is the study of all living things and all their aspects. You could also contrast how people do not develop any phobias of modern killers, such as guns, cars and the like, while still being afraid of snakes, which they never see in an urban setting. Try looking up Susan Minikas " prepared learning " studies.
Reply:How long is this paper? Like the person said above, you could link it to brain chemistry, but if you're not going to do it really really well, don't bother. Something like diabetes, or Alzheimer's or arthritis would be good if you don't have alot of time and word space for research because there is alot of relevant research which is easy to find.
Reply:If you link anxiety disorders (phobias) to brain chemistry, this would make a great paper. You would have to support your paper with good research.
There is, however, a sociological component to these problems, but, fear is a biological reaction.

What is a good and interesting topic for a ten page research paper for a high school american history class?
I have to write a ten page research papaer about any topic in US history, a US Unsolved mystery, about someone, or pretty much anything else, but i do not know what to write about becasue there are so many things to choose from. help please!
What is a good and interesting topic for a ten page research paper for a high school american history class?
See, I was right. Whatever topic you choose, remember to add specific details! Make an outline. First page for introduction, last page to restate and summarize. If you use four major points ( two pages each) you're finished. Since there is so much "history" you will need to narrow the subject. I think you will have a strong paper if you narrow the topic and add plenty of supporting information. Just choose any topic that you can find information and chances are you will learn to appreciate the subject after investing your time and effort.
Reply:Ignore all these people who are telling you to write critically about US history (especially Micheal B-he doesn't understand that at that point in US history America did not try to get involved in other countries business, it's called the "good neighbor policy" and FDR was trying to keep the US out of war and not send millions of US boys to die). There's a time and place for that but it's too hard for a high school research paper because it turns into an argumentative, don't make more work for yourself.
The American Revolution is interesting, especially the patriot groups in New England/Boston area. There's a good book called "The Midnight Ride" about this, it centers around the story of Paul Rivere.
Reply:Write about how FDR knew of the conditions in Europe during the Holocaust and did nothing (or at least very little) to help them.
Reply:the great depression. there are a lot of people who lived through it that you can interview and use as sources.
Reply:If you like music, do a paper on how jazz started - it is uniquely American - then it became big band and swing and then branched off into rockabilly and then... it covers lots of time so you can literally do a page a decade, and several styles so mentioning concurrent events, music styles, artists, impact, pubilc reception of the music, etc. and with 5 styles you go 2 pages each and bang - 10 pages flies by.
Reply:Did Leif Ericsson beat Columbus to America? Did Pocahontas really save John Smith? Was Amelia Earhart a spy? Who killed JFK?
What was the meaning of CROATAN, the puzzling letters carved on the fort at the Lost Colony of Roanoke?
Do reports from the Mexican side of the legendary battle suggest that Davy Crockett did not die at the Alamo?
What prompted Confederate Army mastermind Robert E. Lee to order the suicidal Pickett's Charge?
What did nuclear engineers discover while examining the wreckage of the Maine?
What dramatic revelations emerged from the FBI and KGB files on Julius and Ethel Rosenberg?
Is there evidence that the battle at the Gulf of Tonkin—a key factor in America's escalation of the Vietnam War—may never have taken place?
More ideas? Okay here are a few more, may be some repeats, oh well.
Who killed JFK? Was Lincoln's assassination a Confederate plot? What did Ronald Reagan really know about the Iran-Contra arms deal? Did Lee Harvey Oswald act alone? Who killed activist Malcolm X? Was Amelia Earhart a spy? Was O.J. Simpson guilty?
Reply:How about how the US government has screwed over native Americans from the beginning to this very day.
There's a book that's titled something like "A hundred years of betrayal" or something.
Reply:You should write about the US in WWII, like about Pearl harbor and stuff. I'm sure you could write a lot about that.
Reply:How about the 1948 presidential election. It is a pretty interesting story. Look up Hubert Humphrey's speech at the democratic convention. It is short -- but incredibly moving. The consequesces are that the party decided to put civil rights on the party platform. This upset Southern democrats, who walked out of the convention %26amp; started the Diciecrat party -- putting up their own canddate.
Because of the rebellion in the South, it looked like Republicans would take the White House -- this led to the famous picture of Truman holding up a newspaper that falsely declared Dewey the winner.
It was an interesting election.
Reply:Why don't you write about why GM bought the rail roads in California and destroyed them? and why all the passenger rail system became infamous. You can write about it because this is one of the reason why america is so dependant on oil.

"The harmful affects of the media on the viewers" a good research paper topic?
I have to wrie a persuasive essay for school and I was thinking about using that topic. It has to be three pages long, do you think I would get sufficient information? Would the information be conclusive?
"The harmful affects of the media on the viewers" a good research paper topic?
Which media? Independent or mainstream? Watch and see how long it takes the mainstream media to pick up the story on Hillary syphoning off $5 million from one of Bill's charities to fund her campaign. It's already on many indy media sites. Count the days. I'd say one week before it explodes. It's a good measure of how slow the mainstream is.
Reply:It is, but there are pros and cons.

here is some info
The southern pine beetle (Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann) is one of the pine tree's most destructive insect enemies in the Southern United States, Mexico, and Central America. Because populations build rapidly to outbreak proportions and large numbers of trees are killed, this insect generates considerable concern among managers of southern pine forests.
The beetle occurs from Pennsylvania to Texas and from New Mexico and Arizona to Honduras (fig. 1). Periodic outbreaks commonly recur in fairly well-defined areas. During one outbreak in the Southern States in 1973-77, the southern pine beetle killed the equivalent of about 4.5 billion board feet of pine timber. Average annual tree mortality may exceed the equivalent of 100 million board feet of sawtimber and 20 million cubic feet of growing stock.
they can grow up to 1/8 to 1/3 inch .

How can I make this research paper topic more specific?
The decline in respect and manner in society. I need a specific idea. One idea was to target schools and how children are less respectful than they used to be.
How can I make this research paper topic more specific?
An interesting twist would be to look at one specific action that was "acceptable" in the past that rarely occurs nowadays. For example, what used to be expected of a man's actions towards a woman (i.e. opening doors, pulling out chair, ordering in a restaurant, etc.).
Reply:Maybe do it on race, nationality, religion, gender or something in that area that might help narrowing it down.
Reply:You could also use how audiences are less respectful during performances(plays, concerts, movies), how men are less respectful to women, companies are less respectful to customers...

But as for genetics, Go into the field of Immunology, its fun cause you can see what medicines are bad for certain poeple.

OKAY. First, you have to graduate high school.
Then suffer through several years in some musty college, till you're handed some parchment that says you managed to sleep through college some number of years.
TOO BAD you never learned how to handle yourself academically till now.
I suggest borrowing someone else's written notes.

I have to do a research paper for my Eng 102-1. My instructor wants us to do a paper on a topic that she hasn't read much about.I'm thinking about doing a topic on how to make marriage/relationships survive, but if anyone has any other better suggestions, please let me know. Thanks!

Why we should have healthier food in our public school system.
Why losing weight is good for your heart.
The economic reason for staying in a marriage.
Why health care should be free to people that are not making enough money.

Master's level social work student seeks research project topic/question?
I have to do a research project prior to obtaining my degree. I have contemplated what I want to do for several months and nothing has excited me. Does anyone have any suggestions. It must be related to social work practice and/or human services.
Thanks for your ideas.
Master's level social work student seeks research project topic/question?
Having taught research I'm always found found of ones that relate to your field internship are the best. They tend to be very practical and potentially useful for the agency. They also help you to develop your knowledge base in a specific area. Also if your program has specific concentrations this is very useful to do your project related to your concentration. You might look at program evaluation and/or a needs assessment. Attitudinal research is always easy to do (e.g. attitudes of consumers to social workers, attitudes of social work students to clients, attitudes of community toward clients, or a new policy, etc.). If you have more specifics about your internship, population and concentration..I might be able to be more specific. DA
Reply:What do you do for fun or are talented at? I would approach it from that angle.
You can always do the poverty thing or "microfinance" which you hear all the time now.
Education policy or disabled veterans care...lots of stuff to do!
My suggestion is to go to university websites that have masters in the social work area...look at the homepages of professors and see what kind of research they are doing in their area. Then, you can adapt it for your area. You'll have too many ideas...

United States History research topic? Any ideas would help because I am struggling to find a topic?
The Whiskey Rebellion of 1794. This is the first instance that Federal toops, under the orders of George Washington, put down an internal revolt within the newly formed United States. Intresting topic as not many people know of this event.

Friar’s Heel” or the “Sunday Stone”
The Heel Stone was once known as “Friar’s Heel”. A folk tale, which cannot be dated earlier than the seventeenth century, relates the origin of the name of this stone:
The Devil bought the stones from a woman in Ireland, wrapped them up, and brought them to Salisbury plain. One of the stones fell into the Avon, the rest were carried to the plain. The Devil then cried out, “No-one will ever find out how these stones came here!” A friar replied, “That’s what you think!,” whereupon the Devil threw one of the stones at him and struck him on the heel. The stone stuck in the ground and is still there.
Some claim “Friar’s Heel” is a corruption of “Freyja’s He-ol” or “Freyja Sul”, from the Nordic goddess Freyja and the Welsh word for “way” or “Sunday”, respectively

How do I look up topics(hotels) for a research paper?
That all depends on what you are wanting to know about them. What are the top or best vacation places with the best hotels? How many different varieties of hotels or what exactly do you wish to do your reseach paper on? If you have some idea of what you are wanting to do the paper on its easy. But if you are going to just look up random info I say just go to google and look up genearl information. You can always do the history of hotels, from the first ones down to the most recent. I say look up as much information as you can and even go to the library for books and stuff and see what you find the most info on. Good luck.

Whats a good research topic having to do with computers and the internet?
something BESIDES: privacy and the internet, spam email, computer viruses, online stalking, and phising.
Whats a good research topic having to do with computers and the internet?
How about a social aspect of it? Like, how the internet has impacted the generation of people born recently, like within the last 10 years, and the two generations before comparatively. I bet it would be interesting to compare how they all use the internet differently.
Reply:1. how has the internet impacting on the way teenagers communicate with each other (issues like disinhibition with certain topics, face to face skills diminished etc)
2. how has the internet impacted on making our world a 'smaller place'
3. How has the internet impacted on the sense of loss and fear in families with loved ones posted in war areas - contrrast this with interviews from people who recall what it was llike in previous war times.
4. How has the internet impacted on globalisation/marketing/sales across the world
5. How has the internet contributed to the distribution of child porn and the networking between paedophiles (I read once that the internet provided once isolated paedophiles with an online community in which they feel accepted)
6. How is it that some people can make a committment to a person they have met online in the belief that they are in love and know each other well. What don't we see about other people we meet online (eg. the total picture of someone is so important to our jurdgement - ie..gestures, accent, mannerisms..)
7. How do primary school aged children view the internet and what do they see it offers.
8. Has the internet created or decreased job numbers?
9. The impact on internet addiction and resources to deal with it? Did technology surge ahead without thinking about the consequences?
10. Has the internet facilitated more marriagebreakdowns
I would be really interested to read any articles about these topics.. I find it interesting..

Can anyone give me a good research topic about EDCUATION?
I want to concentrate on the hindrances of mothers(singe or married) pursuing education but I cannot formulate a good statement for this topic. Can anyone please help me?
Can anyone give me a good research topic about EDCUATION?
From the transposed letters in your post, I would mildly suggest that you do some research on the challenges of dyslexics (I am profoundly dyslexic myself) but if yo want to do research on moms getting an education, why not focus on how they OVERCOME stumbling blocks and hurdles. Cooperative day care centers, flexible working hours are just two areas where ingenious moms have found a way to get that education without putting the young ones up for adoption or farming them out to the grandparents. Putting a positive spin on the topic might get you more points and it might even open the door to strategizing in the classroom where you might have peers who have to face this situation in the future.
Reply:When I think of education, I think of the No Child Left Behind Act, and its flaws.
I would argue that the majority of US teachers are forced to teach "to the test," which puts students at a disadvantage for other subjects.
Good luck!
Reply:How can a school facilitate mothers furthering their education?
Reply:How about mothers who rely on public assistance to get by until they get on their feet. I've noticed (atleast in my area) that mothers, or any person for that matter, would be deemed ineligible for public assistance if they were enrolled in school.
Reply:Write about the decline in spelling ability among students.
Reply:Issues that prevent single parents from pursuing eductaion

Does anyone know an interesting topic to research during the antiquity period ?
I have to research something about the antiquity, anything, could be art, could be war, could be leaders.... could be anything, im 15 years old, does anyone know an interesting subject to research about ? And by antiquity i mean since 5000 BC till 0 AD so .... :)
Does anyone know an interesting topic to research during the antiquity period ?
There's a lot of stuff out there. My favorite period of antiquity would be the Roman Empire. Two facinating topics are the general Cinncinatus, he was a hero of George Washington's so much so that Washington had himself sculpted and painted in the image of Cinncinatus. The other is the Gracchi brothers, who attempted to lead major reforms to help the poor in Rome and were both killed by the aristocracy because of their good will beliefs. A quick list of others would be the Carthaginian general Hannibal, the Egyptian ruler Rhamses the Great, the parallels of the lost city of Atlantis to the Minoan civilization specifically the island of Thera, called Santorini in modern times. And the golden age of Greece with it's great ruler Pericles. Hope this helps, good luck on your research.
Reply:Ancient Egyptian religion is a pretty cool subject.
Reply:If you want to do sports, could I recommend the development of the original Olympics? Cool stuff, plus it makes you sound like your interested in more than just sports. Good luck!

What 5 questions should a 15 page research paper on, "No Child Left Behind", answer?
The research topic is "No Child Left Behind: Should students with special needs be included in regular classes? I have to include 5 questions in my proposal that the research paper will answer. I will accept all teachers opinions, advice and help. Feel free to e-mail me if you want to help
What 5 questions should a 15 page research paper on, "No Child Left Behind", answer?
I would state if students with severe disabilities should be tested at all. If so, how? Some of the kids tested do not even respond to their name being called.
Also, how can parents be held accountable? Right now it's 100% of the school district with no parent responsibility. So if a student takes a week off during the exams or misses the introduction to fractions, it's the school's responsibility. No homework? No problem for No Child. Very unfair to the schools to raise someone's child.
Reply:Is the NCLB act working? bias
Is it fair? to expect the same from everyone including students who are cognitive delayed?
Is it fair to base all criteria on test results ? knowing some students do no respond good to testing.
NO child learns the same way and at the same rate? why not give them the chance to learn at their own rate? (capacity level)
Why does the NCLB act take unto consideration the fact that not all children come from happy families and that many students come to school with the sole purpose of eating (surviving). Can they learn if they hungry?
Each school has different needs and that's what we need to focus on.

Whats a good research paper topic for a upper divison college course in history?
Im supposed to be doing an investigation on a topic in history it can range from prehistory to the present, im stuck of what to do. i have an idea, How religion influenced the rise of civilization. however my professor mentioned that the topic was too broad. and at the moment i cant seem to find any useful information on the topic and how to narrow it down. SO if anyone has any great ideas for a paper, please let me know or any suggestions to for the topic which i mention that will be great also.
Whats a good research paper topic for a upper divison college course in history?
Yeah, that one is waay too broad. Actually, you can still do that topic, but you've got to narrow it down. You could do something like How did the rise of Christianity change the empire of Rome as an example. You've got to pick a certain time period and a certain group, so that way you can actually get a good, specific paper.

What would be a good Geology research paper topic?
What kind of specific topic would be good to write about for a basic Geology college course? This is a very short paper (2-4 pages) and I need to have a specific title, but not too specific, but not too broad either. Any suggestions would be great!

I need help with a psychology statistics topic for a research paper?
I need ideas for a psychology statistics topic for a research paper? It needs to be a topic that I can do an easy survey on and I only have like 4 weeks to gather all my data and that includes writing the paper too. I would appreciate sincere topics. thanks!!
I need help with a psychology statistics topic for a research paper?
i dunno how easy this would be, but what about the theory called the Oedipus complex. Its the theory of why guys tend to marry women like their mother and daughters like their fathers. I found it interesting because my mom was in and out of me and my brothers life when we were kids so i basically raised him cause my dad worked all the time. He ended up marry a girl exactly like me - same birthday, same middle name, same height, and acted just like me.
or another good one i heard was how when you are in class alot of professors tend to refer to everything in the male sense of a word,(ie - when speaking about God, we always say he.) i read where a male student had a female professor that changed everything to reflect the female version of the word. So if when speaking about God, she would say she. And you dont realize how it affects how you feel about being excluded from a group. You could maybe make up a survey some how that would differentiate the two and peoples perceptions?
Reply:Maybe the delay of gratification. You could ask some questions with situations about getting something now or getting something better later.
Then you could compare gender, age, or race (difficult to ask) and see if there are significant differences in you sample.
Reply:I'm not sure if this counts for psychology since I used it for sociology... but I did an experiment where I rode up and down in elevators facing backward instead of facing the doors and then wrote my report on how other people reacted to it. Good luck!
Reply:Why don't you propose to video a few different classes at your university?
Then figure how many men and how many women are in each class and if it's a male or female instructor.
Then calculate how much time the instructor talks and how much time the students talk.

Then analyze your results.

What is a good European history research paper topic?
My professor has assigned a 10 page research paper that I must argue my point on. It can be on anything in European history. Any ideas for an interesting or unique paper that will get me an A (hopefully : ] )
Thanks for all of the help!!
What is a good European history research paper topic?
the druids are always fascinating and usually not chosen by everybody else!
Reply:French Revolution would be a good topic! Lots of thing to write about on that
Reply:Ann Bolylen, the mother of Elizabeth 1. its really interesting she had alot to do with changing England. She had a sister mary Bolyen and was the mistress/almost wife of Henry the 8th
Reply:My World History class did an essay/debate on a topic of our choosing similar to this assignment.
I chose the Black Death/Plauge. You can take your argument either way- that is was/was not beneficial to Europe. It is a really unique topic with a lot of scholarly research available.
:)

Can anyone help me to find a good research topic?
Check out http://www.ClassTopic.com They have some great topics that I've used in the past. Each topic has three good sources to get you started on the research, too.
Reply:What grade are you in? Pick a work by Shakespeare or a poem and research the symbolism. Research the evolution of modern English. Research the reasons that certain words are spelled or pronounced different in the UK and the US. Research the way words take on new meanings over the years such as cool, square, fag, queer, or many, many others. The three letter word that is deleted by yahoo use to mean a cigarette but the same as snipe.

Good research paper topics?
Maybe you could compare the difference between how someone's life was before they were saved and how it is after they're saved.
