It sounded too Orwellian ever to succeed. In 2000, Korean cellular carrier SK Telecom introduced a service called "find friends" that lets others follow your every move, using a signal beamed from your handset. At the time, many wondered whether anyone would consent to such tracking.

But five years -- and countless terrorist attacks, earthquakes, and other calamities -- later, the service is taking off. "I used to be worried when my boyfriend didn't answer my calls," says Shim You Sun, a 25-year-old accountant who pays 11¢ each time she checks up on him. "Now I can rest assured that he is at work or busy attending a seminar."

She's one of more than 4 million Koreans who have signed up for various services using technology that can determine a cellular subscriber's location. One, costing $3 per month, will send a message with your coordinates to friends and family periodically while you're traveling. Another will automatically dispatch a text message to friends who get within a block or so of each other as they move around town. Yet another, costing 29¢ a day, will send a message if a person isn't at a specified place at a certain time and then allows the tracker to see the person's movements over the previous five hours. And 20,000 parents pay $10 per month for alerts if their children stray from the route between school and home. The Korea Association of Information %26amp; Telecommunication reckons such services are growing by 74% annually, with revenues expected to triple in 2007, to $1.54 billion, from $500 million last year.

In Korea, the future may have arrived early. Elsewhere it might take a while before consumers warm up to the idea of cellphone tracking. In the U.S., a company called Teen Arrive Alive offers parents a $20-a-month tracking service for their teens. But to date the company has sold the service to only one cell-phone carrier, Nextel.

Others are having a tough time, too. Cingular phased out a tracking service offered by AT%26amp;T Wireless when the two carriers merged last year. Small wonder: Less than 20% of Americans are willing to pay for such info, says market watcher Jupiter Research.

In other countries, consumers are proving more open to cellular tracking. In Britain, The Carphone Warehouse offers mapAmobile, a $52-a-year service that lets parents track their cell-toting kids. And in Japan, subscribers can sign up for text messages advertising bargains at department stores as they pass by.

Korea, though, is clearly at the forefront -- and not just for consumers. Hwang Yoon, who runs a call center for 1,500 taxi drivers, uses a service that broadcasts text messages to cabdrivers within a one-, two-, or three-kilometer radius of a fare's location. The first driver who responds -- by pushing a button on the phone -- gets the job. "This technology is an excellent and cheap fit for us," says Hwang. Sales of business-related tracking services in Korea are expected to jump more than fivefold this year, to $248 million, from $43 million last year.

KEEPING IT PRIVATE

Even so, the 1984 feel of some of these services has prompted Seoul to step in to ensure customers' privacy. In December, the National Assembly approved a law that requires a government license for all companies gathering such location information. Companies with licenses can only share that information with people designated by those being tracked, and those individuals are ensured access to detailed records of all requests for tracking. They can also opt out of the service any time or decide to slip away temporarily by selecting a "hide" option on their phones. "We saw lots of potential in location-based services and took steps to protect individual rights as there were lingering concerns over privacy," says Pan Sang Kwon, a deputy director at the Ministry of Information %26amp; Communication.

It may seem creepy to some, but for many Koreans the increased security of letting others know where you are is worth the tradeoff.

An isearch is supposed to be very personal, so you could do something about how running has changed your life - what it would be like if you couldn't run, what the benefits are physically, and what it does for you mentally. You could research the "runner's high" and the stress relief, and find out why it happens, then go into the way it makes you feel, and how it feels to win a race. I bet runner's world has a website where you could find testimonials from other runners as well.

Please don't mistake this for me bad-mouthing jogging. It's a wonderful sport. I suggest you research the very disproportionate rate of knee surgeries required by female runners, as opposed to male. I'm essentially giving you a good topic. I'm only doing this because in researching this. You will learn about it. Hopefully, before you suffer any injuries. The biomechanics behind this is quite interesting. Good Luck.

i can't think of anything. try as i might, i cannot think of any subject that would be interesting to research and to present.

i don't want to do something that someone has already done in the previous years, so if anyone is an expect, or at least know some things, on a particular subject that you find very interesting, please answer this question.

So TEMPERATURE determines the SEX! In some species only females develop at warmer temperatures (that is only a few degrees different!) If global warming increases the temperature of the world by a few degrees, then it is possible that many reptile species (which temperature determines the sex) will have only one sex developing and without the other sex there will be no more reproduction, followed by extinction of those species.

I can't think of anything to write the essay on. our main topics are fundamentalism, globalism and militarism (online activism is also an option). She says that there will be four foci-- racism, sexism, homophobia and economic oppression.

The most common conflict expressed by the newest generation of adult women is the challenge of career development vs. quality child-rearing. A part of wage inequalities is due to women making the choice to spend more time with their families than with their careers, which require unhealthy / unfair / exploitive amounts of worker energies from both men and women alike, which is where the root of the problem is found.

Most women need to work. Poverty is a world-wide problem suffered mostly by women and children and severely destabilizes societies. Although the Industrial Revolution brought these cultural changes in a dominoes effect that altered the work force and women's roles, we still have not begun to address how we as individuals and as societies are supposed to raise our families now that no one's left at home and now that we do not live in extended family arrangements with older relatives to mind the children.

Socially funded quality childcare, for example, should be a part of post-Industrial societies that have the reality of requiring that over 70% of mothers must work. Maternity/Paternity leave is another step in the right direction. The Israelis experimented with communal child-rearing. The Communist Chinese experimented with birth control measures. Commercial companies experimented with on-site childcare facilities which decrease workers' absenteeism and increase productivity among both female and male employees. Etc.

I personally advocate for a tax funded national program in which parents who have demonstrated adequate educational or training self-sufficiencies such that either parent can support the entire family if needed would be paid to stay home with their pre-Kindergarten children. BOTH parents. Why should the youngest and most economically weak socioeconomic group (young parents) have to bear the entire brunt of raising society's next generation of children? Wouldn't society be stronger if we helped young families to be stronger while they are raising their children? Aren't 99% percent of all human sufferings and social diseases rooted in lousy, inadequate childhoods that we could improve upon with a focus on helping young families over the enormous burdens and difficulties of getting started out in life?

Okay .. please don't say feminism, or abuse or abortion or anything typical like that. It would be really easy to just pick one of those obvious topics and right a research paper about. I'm trying to figure out something that is not as common and that you don't hear about all the time, but is still interesting and I will be able to find enough information on it to write a 10 page paper. I'm really stumped and have been rackin my brain and trying to look something up for weeks. Does anyone have any good ideas about what I could pick to do my paper on that my professor will be impressed with and the other students will not be bored to death when I present it?

Is this a POSITION paper? Will you argue that BC is a good thing? If so, think about how it has given women freedom that they never had before. We never would have had such a large female work force without BC. Before BC, the average married woman had a child or pregnancy every year or two, often resulting in huge families (my grandpa was one of 11, my mother in law was one of 13, etc.). Would women have ever really been able to pursue higher education and top levels of management with 13 kids? Don't think so. Would our economy be where it is (on a global level as well) with only men working full time? Also, it gave women sexual freedoms never known before. Now, hardly any woman is a virgin when she marries, because BC lets her have sex with a partner with whom she only has a sexual interest, not a marriage interest. Conversely, BC lets women postpone childbearing to the point that when they DO want kids, they encounter fertility issues due to age. Would we have the multi-billion dollar a year infertility/IVF industry we have now if there were no BC? No way. Also, what about the health issues? The Pill has probably saved many lives--lots of women died in childbirth or suffered ill effects from so many pregnancies. But, the pill also raises your risk for heart attack, stroke, and deadly blod clots, especially when you're older. What are the long term concerns involved in being on the Pill for 15 or more years? Why isn't there a male BC pill? Is it just because it's the woman that carries the baby and is therefore her sole responsibility? What role has BC played in the spread of AIDS and other STDs--that is, if a woman doesn't worry about getting pregnant, is she less likely to have safe sex?

The Pill literally changed the world in MANY ways, and you should have no trouble writing your minimum pages! If you just stop to think about how many things have changed since it's use became so widespread, it really is astounding. I would say it's up there with penicillin in terms of a drug that has affected virtually everyone and in a lot of not-so-obvious ways. Hope this has helped and good luck!

Reply:Yes, menopause. pre and post. menopause is a woman's change of life. Those words are not JUST words. A woman really changes when she does not get her period anymore. Libido goes down the tubes, and the body takes on another shape. Metally, thoughts really change. I think there is some difference when woman bear chldren and woman that do not.

I am a woman, no children, and I did not know the changes that took place in my body were that serious until I experienced them. I am 58 years old. Alot of woman divorce after menopause. I also understand why older men go after younger woman . Alot of research in this taboo area. Good Luck
Reply:I'd do some historical research on Margaret Sanger and the early reactions to the movement or historical research on oral contraceptives (the pill) and how it changed women's lives (being able to control their own fertility without a man's intervention or mechanical barriers) in the late 1960's, or even the discovery of the HPV virus and the cervical cancer connection, and whether the necessary reliance on condoms is changing women's ideas about their own sexual empowerment.
Reply:You should write about women and raunch culture- ie. the impact of the sex industry (pornography, stripping, Girls Gone Wild, prostitution etc), but with the added dynamic of how women have begun to be active participants in this industry, operating under the assumption that if they choose to do it, they are actually gaining power over men ( a covert form of exploitation and manipulation, as well as a sad, sad state of denial). Not enough research has been done on this topic in general, but definately enough for a ten page paper. I also think women and crime is an interesting topic. Research shows that women are convicted more often and given longer sentences than men for nonviolent crimes. Studies also show that women are impacted by incarceration more negatively than men and have greater difficulties getting jobs, maintaining parental rights, are given harsher probation terms, and are given less resources to stay out of trouble. If you didn't like either of these, hopefully they at least got you thinking...Good luck.

Reply:I would be curious to read about female inventors and whether they fiind it any more difficult to get others to take them seriously about their ideas and possibly to fund them to be able to bring those ideas into production. I "googled" female inventors and came up with quite a few references. Does that sound like something you might be interested in researching? I think we usually associate that field with males, but why should we? Women have very creative minds and are good problem solvers. Reply:What about current child support /vistation laws... with a spin that noone expects. Focus on the stepmother: her role, the impact upon her family unit, which includes a husband, and another woman's child/children. It isn't always the evil woman portrayed in all the media, and there is some great research to validate all of your arguments.

Reply:First, I presuppose that your women's studies class has already covered such obligatory Feminist critics as Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar, Elaine Showalter, and Helene Cixous, and that perhaps the course syllabus started out the semester reading Virginia Woolf's "A Room of One's Own". Having stated the "givens" of almost every survey women's studies class along with its mandatory theories, such as "writing the body" and "women's time", as a former college English professor (and a current secondary English teacher), I'd first suggest you need to narrow your topic and then twist it a tad.

For example, you might write about a pop-cultural icon , such as Madonna, Anna Nicole Smith (selections from her diaries are now online), or (dare I suggest it) Paris Hilton, and show how her actions either empower women or detract from their empowerment.

If all else fails, Amy Tan and Margaret Atwood continue to write some very fine contemporary Feminist novels. My favorite Atwood novel, "Alias Grace" (1996), for example, deviates from the Victorian idea of "the angel in the house."

The key here is to LIMIT or NARROW DOWN your topic so it is manageable in a research paper. For example, THE CIVIL WAR would be much too broad. WHY WAS THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG CONSIDERED THE TURNING POINT OF THE CIVIL WAS would be narrowed down and manageable. Secondly, put your topic in the form of a question. Then the answer to the question becomes your research. For example, THE HISTORY OF MTV is a very poor topic because it is much too broad and does not allow you to answer a question which is the "point" you are trying to develop. Choose a subject that interests you, narrow it down, put it into the form of a question so you will have a point to research. Good luck.

I dont know about human biology... that sounds more like something for a Psych paper. But if you want to do phobias, you can talk about brain activity and what might be the conditions of detecting that type of problem... neural chemical imbalance and stuff.

Reply:I would consider it a valid topic if you were able to show how phobias have some type of physiological basis. Phobias are generally thought of as mental health disorders triggered by a specific life event. If the paper is supposed to be Human Biology, I would suggest a topic that is more closelu conneced to biology. If you really want to keep Phobias as the topic, perhaps writing about how anti-anxiety drugs interact with the brain to treat Phobias.
Reply:Do not listen to any of these functional biologists. This is a good evolutionary question. You could explore the evolved histories of the snake or spider phobia. How they arose among our ancestors as a general defense against the venomous. Do not make the mistake of these molecular and microbiologists. Biology is the study of all living things and all their aspects. You could also contrast how people do not develop any phobias of modern killers, such as guns, cars and the like, while still being afraid of snakes, which they never see in an urban setting. Try looking up Susan Minikas " prepared learning " studies.
Reply:How long is this paper? Like the person said above, you could link it to brain chemistry, but if you're not going to do it really really well, don't bother. Something like diabetes, or Alzheimer's or arthritis would be good if you don't have alot of time and word space for research because there is alot of relevant research which is easy to find.
Reply:If you link anxiety disorders (phobias) to brain chemistry, this would make a great paper. You would have to support your paper with good research.

There is, however, a sociological component to these problems, but, fear is a biological reaction.

See, I was right. Whatever topic you choose, remember to add specific details! Make an outline. First page for introduction, last page to restate and summarize. If you use four major points ( two pages each) you're finished. Since there is so much "history" you will need to narrow the subject. I think you will have a strong paper if you narrow the topic and add plenty of supporting information. Just choose any topic that you can find information and chances are you will learn to appreciate the subject after investing your time and effort.
Reply:Ignore all these people who are telling you to write critically about US history (especially Micheal B-he doesn't understand that at that point in US history America did not try to get involved in other countries business, it's called the "good neighbor policy" and FDR was trying to keep the US out of war and not send millions of US boys to die). There's a time and place for that but it's too hard for a high school research paper because it turns into an argumentative, don't make more work for yourself.

The American Revolution is interesting, especially the patriot groups in New England/Boston area. There's a good book called "The Midnight Ride" about this, it centers around the story of Paul Rivere.

Because of the rebellion in the South, it looked like Republicans would take the White House -- this led to the famous picture of Truman holding up a newspaper that falsely declared Dewey the winner.

An interesting twist would be to look at one specific action that was "acceptable" in the past that rarely occurs nowadays. For example, what used to be expected of a man's actions towards a woman (i.e. opening doors, pulling out chair, ordering in a restaurant, etc.).

Having taught research I'm always found found of ones that relate to your field internship are the best. They tend to be very practical and potentially useful for the agency. They also help you to develop your knowledge base in a specific area. Also if your program has specific concentrations this is very useful to do your project related to your concentration. You might look at program evaluation and/or a needs assessment. Attitudinal research is always easy to do (e.g. attitudes of consumers to social workers, attitudes of social work students to clients, attitudes of community toward clients, or a new policy, etc.). If you have more specifics about your internship, population and concentration..I might be able to be more specific. DA

That all depends on what you are wanting to know about them. What are the top or best vacation places with the best hotels? How many different varieties of hotels or what exactly do you wish to do your reseach paper on? If you have some idea of what you are wanting to do the paper on its easy. But if you are going to just look up random info I say just go to google and look up genearl information. You can always do the history of hotels, from the first ones down to the most recent. From the transposed letters in your post, I would mildly suggest that you do some research on the challenges of dyslexics (I am profoundly dyslexic myself) but if yo want to do research on moms getting an education, why not focus on how they OVERCOME stumbling blocks and hurdles. Cooperative day care centers, flexible working hours are just two areas where ingenious moms have found a way to get that education without putting the young ones up for adoption or farming them out to the grandparents. Putting a positive spin on the topic might get you more points and it might even open the door to strategizing in the classroom where you might have peers who have to face this situation in the future.

I would argue that the majority of US teachers are forced to teach "to the test," which puts students at a disadvantage for other subjects.

There's a lot of stuff out there. My favorite period of antiquity would be the Roman Empire. Two facinating topics are the general Cinncinatus, he was a hero of George Washington's so much so that Washington had himself sculpted and painted in the image of Cinncinatus. The other is the Gracchi brothers, who attempted to lead major reforms to help the poor in Rome and were both killed by the aristocracy because of their good will beliefs. A quick list of others would be the Carthaginian general Hannibal, the Egyptian ruler Rhamses the Great, the parallels of the lost city of Atlantis to the Minoan civilization specifically the island of Thera, called Santorini in modern times. And the golden age of Greece with it's great ruler Pericles. Hope this helps, good luck on your research.

I would state if students with severe disabilities should be tested at all. If so, how? Some of the kids tested do not even respond to their name being called.

Also, how can parents be held accountable? Right now it's 100% of the school district with no parent responsibility. So if a student takes a week off during the exams or misses the introduction to fractions, it's the school's responsibility. No homework? No problem for No Child. Very unfair to the schools to raise someone's child.

Why does the NCLB act take unto consideration the fact that not all children come from happy families and that many students come to school with the sole purpose of eating (surviving). Can they learn if they hungry?

i dunno how easy this would be, but what about the theory called the Oedipus complex. Its the theory of why guys tend to marry women like their mother and daughters like their fathers. I found it interesting because my mom was in and out of me and my brothers life when we were kids so i basically raised him cause my dad worked all the time. He ended up marry a girl exactly like me - same birthday, same middle name, same height, and acted just like me.

or another good one i heard was how when you are in class alot of professors tend to refer to everything in the male sense of a word,(ie - when speaking about God, we always say he.) i read where a male student had a female professor that changed everything to reflect the female version of the word. So if when speaking about God, she would say she. And you dont realize how it affects how you feel about being excluded from a group. You could maybe make up a survey some how that would differentiate the two and peoples perceptions?
Reply:Maybe the delay of gratification. You could ask some questions with situations about getting something now or getting something better later.

Then you could compare gender, age, or race (difficult to ask) and see if there are significant differences in you sample.

I feel like I have a good research topic. However, it is simply not turning out the way I imagined it. My advisor is no help. In fact, he is rather flaky. I have not been able to reach him for about two months now. Worst of all, he hasn't even tried to contact me. On top of all, I am not even funded. What should I do? Should I quit before I waste even more time?

You don't need an advisor to show that you are dedicated and intelligent. If you insist on relying on advisors for external motiviation or help, find yourself another source.

If you are close to finishing your research, then continue. If you've just started, then perhaps it's time to search for another route.
Reply:Don't quit or try to turn this into some kind of political skermish with your advisor. Maybe you should take a break or vacation and start fresh or maybe just start over. Pick something marketable?
Reply:The advisor is just a resource to help you out during the research. But the real person to trust is yourself. Just like he said if you are at the point of finishing just finish with it, but if you are gathering data, searching, and organizing the information perhaps you should consider to change your research. Try to continue to get in touch with your advisor otherwise find out if you could change for another more accesible. Reply:My personal favorite is Merck. It is very techical, but it covers everything. Even those things your vet would prefer you not know.

Remember, sometimes a little knowlegde is dangerous. Be very careful in reading to not get overly concerned. These manuals were written for vets and tend to scare you to death when you read about certain ailments.

A question I've often heard that's worth researching is "Since Buddhism is non-theistic, what is the source of it's moral teachings?" Or something along those lines. You could investigate how Buddhist morality works without a "boss" to dictate it.

The name Buddhism comes from the word "budhi" which means "to wake up." This philosophy originated in the experience of a man named Siddhata Guatama(Buddha) nearly 2500 years ago in northern India.Buddhism has been compared to the 16th Century Protestant Reformation in that it was an offshoot of Vedantic Hinduism. While there are many forms of Buddhism collectively they are made up of nearly 350 million adherents worldwide (1.8 million in America in 1995 according to the Encyclopedia Britannica 1999 ed.). "Buddhism seems to have arrived in America sometime in the 19th Century. Emerson and Thoreau were touched by it. According to Peter Matthiessen, the first Zen master known in America arrived in the 1890s, and shortly afterward, D. T. Suzuki began a long career of translating texts and writing about Buddhism. Buddhism arrived in this country a second time after a wave of Tibetan lamas (driven out by the Chinese invasion of 1956) arrived in America the 1970s, set up schools and publishing houses, and began teaching on a wide scale."

While Buddhism teaches morals such as avoiding killing any creature, stealing, adultery, lying, corrupt speech, freed, anger and ignorance it is rooted in the teaching of a man who never claimed to be God (or a god) nor did he claim to be a prophet of God.The question that remains to be answered for 2500 years is "if a man is uncertain of his future can he be trusted with your future?"Buddha was quite uncertain about where he would go when he died and his remains can still be found in Kusinara at the foot of the Himalayan Mountains while in contrast Jesus Christ defeated the grave and can be found in heaven and in your life!

I). Who was Buddha?

Siddhartha Gautama (Gotama) 563 BC-483 BC (debated as to the actual date within 30-40 years)

Buddha was son of Suddhodana a ruler of a district in modern day Nepal. Suddhodana raised Buddha to be a monarch one day.

At age 16 Buddha married Bhaddakaccanna (Yasodara)

At age 29 he saw the "Four Signs" an old man, a sick man, a dead man, and a beggar.This led to his unsatisfaction of life and so he abandoned his wife and son (Rahula) to find the answer to life.

Age 35 sitting under a Bodhi (Bo) tree meditating Buddha experienced the highest degree of "God-consciousness" or called "Nirvana".He was thereafter known as the "Enlightened One"

Buddha made his 1st proclamation in Isipatana (Near modern Benares north of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh state, northern India,). It was here that he proclaimed the beginning of the "Wheel of Truth". This was Buddha's "dharma" (dhamma) or his teaching of the "basic law which upholds the universe".

Buddha's teachings were passed orally for nearly 300 years prior to their recording and these were not collected until the 1st century BC (the Pali Cannon).

II). What does Buddhism teach?

A). Buddha's 3 Basic Laws and 4 Noble Truths

3 Basic Laws (Signata)- these are declared to be characteristic of all compounded things.

ØImpermanence (anicca)- everything changes.Nothing is permanent.

ØUnsatisfactoriness (dukkha)- there is no goodness or beauty.

ØInsubstantiality (anatta)- there is no permanent essence, self or soul (in contrast to the Hindu concept of the soul "atman."

4 Noble Truths- these are the key to human perfection.

Ø1). There is pain and suffering in life. To exist means there will be suffering, birth is painful and so is death

Ø2). Suffering is caused by desire, craving or lust.

Ø3). Freedom from suffering comes when a person rids himself of all desires. "Enlightened people do not cease to experience the pain of existence. They only stop creating illusions that amplify that pain and cause new suffering"

Ø4). The way out of suffering is through the 8-fold Path.This path is adesigned to develop habits that release one from the suffering caused by ignorance and craving.

The 8 fold path is:

Right Views

Right Intentions

Right Speech

Right Behavior

Right Occupation

Right Effort

Right Contemplation

Right Meditation

This concept of salvation is simply "works-salvation" contrary to "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV). On Buddha's deathbed his followers asked who they should follow next and he replied "Be ye a lamp (or island) unto yourselves; work out your own salvation with diligence."

B). Karma, Samsara and Nirvana

Karma refers to the law of cause and effect in a person's life.This concept was originated in Hinduism and yet Buddha altered his idea of Karma in that you are what you are in the next life based on what you do in this life until you reach the state of Nirvana breaking the cycle of birth and rebirth.Hinduism supports a caste system in that you cannot progress from one rank to the next.

Samsara is the idea that only feelings, impressions, and the karma that is passed on goes through the birth and rebirth cycle.Buddha did not believe in the soul or permanence thus there is no self to carry into the cycle of life. The new life is similar, but not the same person.

Nirvana is the "blowing out" of existence. It is an eternal state of being where karma and the life cycle stop.It is a place where desire and individual consciousness ends.Buddha described it as "a condition, where there is neither earth nor water, neither air nor light, neither limitless space, nor limitless time, neither any kind of being, neither ideation nor non-ideation, neither this world nor that world. There is neither arising nor passing-away, nor dying, neither caused nor effect, neither change nor standstill."(Taylor and Offner, The World's Religions, GrandRapids: InterVarsity, 1975, p177).

C). Meditation and Yoga

The regular practice of meditation is used to cultivate calm and tranquility and to cultivate insight.The "lotus position" is used which is the classic yoga stance and begins with emphasis on concentration in breathing, then body, then mind through the 3 Basic Laws and the 1st two parts of the 8-fold path.

III). What Doesn't Buddhism Teach?

ØBuddha was not certain of his or your future.

"These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God." (I Jn 5:13 KJV)

ØBuddha did not teach a personal God.

"and ye shall bear the sins of your idols: and ye shall know that I am the Lord GOD." (Ezek 23:49 KJV)

ØBuddha always said "come and see.

rather than belief by faith, however, when he died no one could "come and see" but had to put their faith in him.Jesus came and said to believe by faith and then He rose from the dead for all to "come and see"!

The first thing is considering the criteria you have been set by your course such as length and presentation of research. You should consider relevance to course, availability of research material and so forth. The topic should be narrow enough to cover but broad enough to find material. You should also enjoy the topic if possible because you will be spending a lot of time on it.

If you are a science student, you might want to read Graduate Research: A Guide for Students in the Sciences. Its author Robert Smith suggests 11 points to consider when choosing a topic:

1. Can you pursue it enthusiastically?

2. Can it sustan your interest?

3. Can the problem be solved by you?

4. Is it worth doing?

5. Will it lead to other topics that you can work on?

6. Is it manageable?

7. Can you make an original contribution?

8. If the problem is solved, will it attract attention in your field?

9. Are you, or will you be in a position to solve it?

10. By solving it, will you have established skills in your discipline?

11. Will it establish in a promising area for the future?

Thanks for asking, I have done that quite a few times. Brainstorm several topics that are of interest to you and then narrow it down to the one you will do. It may take a few days to narrow it down. Then go for it! Good luck.

In my English class, we have to write about a piece of art or music that has a large effect on us. I love all of Elliott Smith's music and I would like to write about one of his songs. I was thinking "A King's Crossing" might be a good one to focus on because there's a lot to describe (the eerie tune, the symbolic lyrics, etc.). So does anyone have any suggestions for sources to use on this topic? Specific articles or books or anything that I should refer to? I've found a few articles but haven't been too successful. Ahhhh, Elliott Smith. It's always incredibly refreshing to see something about him on here. It's very rare.

I don't know if it would be of any use, but a booklet that maybe accompanies New Moon (maybe, my friend was telling me about it, but I bought the record on iTunes) has a lot of information about him in it and with it coming with the cd could have useful information about the songs. I would maybe google Elliott Smith interviews or articles. I'm sure there is some good stuff. I'll try to think of more and if I do I will certainly reply back to the question, but unfortunately I'm not sure. I would think though that it may be beneficial to look at something earlier since there may be more info on the stuff that came out while he was alive.

Reply:'Between the Bars' is my favorite Elliott Smith song. There's a lot to write about. The way it was recorded is interesting. He records the vocals twice and pans one recording far left and the other far right. He does the same with the guitar. Then he adds another guitar to play along with the melody for a bit. It's beautiful. But I suppose you should pick something that you personally feel affected by.
Reply:"Needle in the Hay" would be a good one, especially since it goes along with the suicide scene in the movie They Royal Tenenbaums. Sony is taking a far different approach in terms of marketing their PlayStation 3 console to the masses.

Sony is readying up a brand new marketing scheme which will focus on mainstream games which the casual gamer may enjoy. These include the karaoke type game SingStar, the social party game LittleBigPlanet, as well as the American-pasttime MLB 07: The Show. These three games are going to be exploited to the fullest and truly set up to showcase the PlayStation 3 as a family-oriented console and Sony as a family-oriented company.

The PlayStation 3 manager Kim Nguyen stated that "Our goal is to definitely widen our target base and not be so niche. We are not all about shoot ’em-up bloody games. There are friendly games."

"This is high-def entertainment messaging, where we have our exclusive software titles, and we are delivering a very powerful machine. On the movie side, you have beautiful movies that you can watch on the PS3. We are going for that larger audience."

It seems that Sony is taking a much broader approach and trying to stray away from the hardcore gamers with this marketing campaign in favor of trying to pick up some casual gamers which Nintendo has been making a killing off of for years now, especially recently with the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS. We will have to wait and see how Sony does with this approach as it is a huge side-step from what they are used to doing and how they market their consoles.

My high school is requiring a senior project, which includes a research paper that has something to do with that project. I am casting, directing, and producing a children's play to be performed at a local elementary school, but I'm not sure what to do my research paper on. Please help.

Depending on the show, write a paper about the script and writer, discussing the writers achiements, or the shows influince on it's socity
Reply:Well, a research paper that has to do with producing a children's play... hmmm.. it's hard to do "research" due to there's no really hard facts that you can gather about social situations in an elementary school setting. You can't really play lab rats either, conducting emotional experiments on them...Can you change your project???? Just joking...OK... Here's a doozy, but I think it's creative...

I would split your play into skits, I suggest doing a play called, "How to Eat Like a Child." I know that you can buy it online and could probably find it at your local library and make copies. It's a whole bunch five-or-so-minute plays about being a kid... lots of fun for kids and adults. You could also do. "Charlie Brown" skits... like the old-school cartoons... anyways... cast your class into the individual skits ( I suggest doing only two, maybe three groups.) Prior to starting production, make music CD's for each child participant. But make two or three different types of CD's (depending on the number of skits you have). Make a CD of classical music; Mozart, Vivaldi, etc... and hand that out to one cast of one skit... Make another CD of Disney Songs or "Golden Oldies" something "G" rated, make copies and hand that out to the other group. The students are to take this home and listen to it while studying their lines, you should also play it while they rehearse in their individual groups. There are a lot of studies and RESEARCH (like that, eh?) out there regarding the effects of music on people and brain chemistry. Study the different groups of students and how well they perform, focus, and memorize lines. Send home a letter to the parents (that they must sign) with a track listing of all the songs on the CD. Explain to the parents that their children are to listen to it ONLY while they study lines for the play, this way it doesn't effect other schoolwork. Explain to them your experiment and that you are studying the effects of different music on the brain. If the parents disagree with any of the music or the project in general, their child is free to participate without listening to any music. Reply:If you are into children's theater and need an interesting topic, may I suggest that you look into the brew haw that many school districts make about "The Wizard of Oz". The book/movie/play has been banned by many districts because of its "witchcraft" overtones. I think you will find the history of the debate fascinating.

To me it's shame full how one of the greatest classic children's movies of all time can be banned from our schools by the religious right.

The topic of censorship and children's theater would make for an excellent %26amp; interesting research exploration.

Reply:First, yes you should include a bibliography. Um, proposal is basicly what would you do? You have to formulate a claim about your topic. Like, if television is "bad" for children, what would you do? or if its a formidable learning tool, what would you do? You should know about the proposal youre making, what reasons you caould offer to support your proposal. and what evidence do you have that implementing your proposal will lead to the results you want. Reply:Well, "the rise of civilization" sort of narrows it down for itself. See, that refers to the societies in the fertile crescent in the 4th millenium b.c. Specificly the Egyptians and Sumerians. "Civilization" in this context is the division of labour, the rise of bureaucracy etc. The priests played an important role in this story. So there you have your connection.

Reply:I am interested in environmental restoration. There are many groups out there, usually in every type of area that wants to return a piece of land to what it was like before people got to it. For me, I want to focus on islands because once you "fix" something, it tends to want to stay fixed.

Think about all the plants and trees and animals out there that just don't belong there. For instance, in the South, there was a time after a bad flood in the early 1900's that caused everyone to plant Japanese kudzu vines to hold the top soil down. Now kudzu is a horrible menace to forests that it smothers. In California, we have Spanish broom, a bush that is pretty in the spring, but chokes out everything else and creates a big fire hazard. In California we also have animals that just don't belong, like feral pigs and goats. Both destroy native fragile plants, with pigs digging up the roots so that when it rains, it causes mudslides!

However, when it comes to getting rid of something, especially animals, you run into problems with people who think that it's cute and fuzzy or "it's one of God's creatures". There are huge problems with reintroducing wolves near sheep ranches like in the Yellowstone area, but there people who complain that there are too many whitetail deer also don't want them shot. Where can man draw the line? Is it wrong to get rid of a golden eagle because it is eating all the endangered foxes?

My friend and I are trying to plan a Christian Teen Night at our church by the end of this year. We plan on talking about different subjects on how the devil is taking over our young generation through sex, music, alcohol, televison shows, drugs etc. We want teenagers to know that we are the future and to give their lives up to God and not to be a slave of the devil. The purpose of this is to reach out to teenagers who are lost and are in sin and to get them to give their hearts to God. Any suggestions???

You could discuss the reality of the christian Satan devil mythology.

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.

The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.

Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.

Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.

Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Reply:First of all I want to say you are doing an awesome thing! :-) If you are looking for ways to draw teens, or even how exactly approach issues, go to God first. He will tell you in your heart what will be the most effective. I'm sure it will all work out great!
Reply:You can toss the life preserver, but don't imagine that they all put them on. Everyone has their path and even though it would be a blessing for all to see the most lost to be found, it's rare to see it happen that way.

I think it would be better to illuminate the peaceful side of things as opposed to gearing up a hell-fire and brimstone talk. Focus on the positives of leading a Godly life as opposed to the negatives of the dark side.
Reply:I'm a teen. I gave my life totally to Christ about 2 weeks ago. And I can say without a shadow of a doubt, that it was the example of my high school teacher and his wife that brought me to Jesus. A Christian witness is more powerful than you will ever know.

Hmmm. . . I'm guessing that you are in 5th grade if you are 11, since I teach 6th and most of those kids are 12. You could do something on middle school life if 6th grade is middle school where you live. Hopefully you just typed this question quickly, since I'm guessing that Grammar and writing might not be your best subject. I'm honestly not being mean- just an English teacher.

A difficult, advanced topic would be: IQ vs EQ or Gifted classes vs Homogenious mixed ability classes and whether they should be separated or together (since you say your are one of the "smarter" students in your class) here's a sample article to use: http://www.connectforkids.org/node/516 you could look at socioeconomic levels and whether there should be gifted classes or not, since in most places rich equals gifted and poor equals learning disabled. You could look at the requirements necessary to get into advanced/gifted classes in your county or school district and whether you feel these are fair. In your research you would have plenty of primary sources and you could interview someone at the school board on this topic. Since you said you are "smart" you probably have a teacher who is certified in this area of education who can also help you out with this topic.

You could also just do a topic that means something to you. Marine Biologists or another career that you'd be interested in in the future, Arabian Horses or another favorite animal, Anorexia is a popular topic with girls your age- or psychological or physical diseases , Cell phones and whether they should be used by kids (and the recent history of cell phone usage by kids- you'd be using a lot of periodicals for research here), You could also just type in "controversial topics" in a site that your school and parents allow.

There are many interesting topics related to gifted students.

1. The standards for gifted status vary from state to state. A child may be identified under one state's criteria, but another state may not identify him as gifted.

2. The standards for minority and/or low income children vary from those of other children. In our county (I don't know if this is state, district, or country wide) minority students don't have to score as high on IQ tests as non-minority students.

3. The over/under identification of certain gender/racial groups and how that is being handled.

4. The programs available to children identified as gifted are very different from school to school and county to county.

5. Gifted students have a very high rate of dropping out of school. You could look at rates, reasons, do a long term study following a certain group of kids to see what happens to them.

6. How are giften children treated by their teachers and peers? How does the child with the 140 IQ feel as he sits in class with the special needs child with a 60 IQ? (And now, with the push towards inclusion, it happens quite often and can be frustrating for both students.)

7. What special problems do gifted students have? Do they have problems with peers/teachers?

8. Are there common disabilities comorbid with being gifted?

9. Invstigate the differences between students at the high end of the gifted spectrum and low end of the gifted spectrum. How do they compare to students whose IQ didn't qualify them, but who qualified under alternative criteria? How do their performances - academic, behavioral - differ? What about the differences between girls and boys?

Reply:I have a gifted brother and an autistic brother. In elemetary school my gifted brother was looked down on by the teacher. He was smarter than she was and he "asked too many questions". They had to put him in a special school for gifted kids. He graduated from high school at 15.

My autistic brother is in special ed. In his class is a boy who is gifted and autistic. No one knows how to treat him and how to act around him. It is sad.

My thesis would be that the only reason this case has received so much attention is because the suspects were upper-class white kids who's parents hired big money lawyers. I would not condone the prosecutor's actions, but just say they are fairly representative of the system and usually nobody cares. You could point out the many cases of false imprisonment and police abuse that have, after many years, been exonerated due to continued efforts of legal aide organizations.

To give your paper a good jumping off point, it's always a good idea to write about something with which you have some degree of familiarity or interest. For example, if you're into insects, and have always wondered how butterflies and moths undergo metamorphosis, that would be good subject matter for your paper. Or if you feel strongly about a subject--say you believe all child molesters should be castrated-- do your paper on that. I did one on embryonic stem cell research that I later forwarded to my Congresswoman and Senators. (I don't recall getting a response, but at least I was able to give them that information.) I don't know if I helped you resolve anything, but hopefully I at least gave you a narrower playing field. All the best on your paper! :-)

It all depends on what you're interested in. If you know what you want to do when you get to college then pick something along those lines. Or even if you have an idea then go on that and you could interview someone you know in that field. For example if you think you might want to be a doctor then go interview your doctor. If not you could choose something like a sport you really like and research it's beginnings. Or you could research the use of work dogs. I could help you out with that one if you like. There's so many things you could research. Make a list of things you enjoy or might want to research and narrow it down and make it more specific and it'll just come to you. Good luck!
